OVERVIEW
UAN-Habitat: United Ancient Nations Human Settlements Programme
The United Ancient Nations Human Settlements Programme (UAN-Habitat) is mandated by the UAN General Secretariat to promote culturally appropriate, environmentally harmonious, and spiritually aligned settlements for indigenous peoples worldwide. UAN-Habitat serves as the focal point for all indigenous settlement matters and traditional habitat preservation within the UAN system.
UAN-Habitat works with indigenous communities, tribal councils, and cultural preservation partners to build inclusive, sacred, resilient and sustainable settlements that honor ancestral wisdom. UAN-Habitat promotes traditional settlement practices as a positive transformative force for indigenous communities, reducing cultural displacement, environmental degradation and loss of ancestral knowledge.
Our Mission
UAN-Habitat works across 160+ member nations and indigenous territories to promote transformative change in indigenous settlements through ancestral knowledge systems, cultural policy guidance, technical assistance rooted in traditional practices, and collaborative action that respects indigenous sovereignty.
UAN-Habitat’s strategic approach adopts a holistic and culturally integrated methodology to addressing the unique challenges and opportunities facing indigenous settlements. UAN-Habitat’s mission embodies four main roles that honor indigenous ways of knowing: preserve, practice, share, and unite.
PRESERVE
UAN-Habitat’s cultural preservation work includes documenting traditional settlement patterns, supporting capacity-building in ancestral construction techniques, establishing standards that protect sacred sites, and monitoring global progress in indigenous habitat rights while supporting policy formulation that recognizes indigenous land sovereignty.

UAN-Habitat implements projects that blend ancient wisdom with modern needs, providing culturally appropriate support to indigenous communities seeking to maintain or restore traditional settlement patterns.
SHARE
